Abstract

This article deals with the subject matter of “regionalism”, considered as regional economic blocks of countries and its effects on customs and its functions on taxation and tariffs and also as facilitators of international trade. The approach is both theoretical and practical. In the theoretical side, the author offers some insights about international politics as an academic field of studies and the characteristics of the international system in contemporary world. Regionalism is considered as a main issue in the international system and the free trade agreements (FTA) as important policy instruments. In the applied side, the paper mentions the FTA recently signed by Chile some of them in force–, and the role of Customs in matters such as, access of goods to markets, rules of origin, advance rulings and intellectual property rights. All these elements have to be integrated in a broad and medium range policy of inclusion of the country as an active actor in the process of globalization.
